The game, which I've called a PUBG knock-off in the past, has many advantages over Bluehole's 'Battle Royale' hit. It runs better, gets more frequent updates and, most importantly, is free-to-play.
My colleague Paul Tassi goes into some length about why Fortnite is 'dethroning' PUBG in the genre, and he's right on all counts. But there's still one thing that PUBG does better than Fortnite: Tension.
PUBG creates tension in a way that I just never feel playing Fortnite. Partly that's just an aesthetic thing. PUBG is a realistic military shooter at its core, whereas Fortnite is a cartoony, almost comical game. Indeed, Fortnite's building mechanics, however cool they can be in practice, make the game feel even more cartoonish and unrealistic. Matches that essentially boil down to who can build the better sky palace are a little silly as far as I'm concerned.
