A national reckoning on gun violence has caused the National Rifle Association, or NRA, to lose its relationships to a growing number of national brands distancing themselves from the gun-rights lobby group after the recent deadly mass shooting at a high school in Florida, according to a number of reports.
The move by corporate brands comes as high school students and Democrats call on the Republican-majority Congress and President Donald Trump to enact more restrictions on high-powered firearms. A 19-year-old used a legally obtained AR-15 to open fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, killing 17 people and wounding at least 16 more on Feb. 14.
The NRA has opposed gun restrictions saying it could lead to an erosion of the Second Amendment and other civil rights. But the backlash against the NRA reached a fever pitch Friday with the hashtag #BoycottNRA trending on Twitter and at least nine corporate brands publicly saying they are not affiliated with the group.
